Don’t Make It Personal

Not every challenge is an attack.
In this episode of Before the Pressure, Dr. Arnold Sanchez explores how leaders can lose clarity when feedback, disagreement, questions, or setbacks begin to feel personal. Once ego enters the room, the conversation can quickly shift from solving the issue to defending identity.
Strong leaders learn to separate the work from their worth, stay curious under pressure, and protect clarity more than ego.
In This Episode
- Why feedback can feel more personal under pressure
- How defensiveness limits judgment and honest communication
- The difference between challenge and rejection
- Why secure leaders can admit when they are wrong
- How to separate identity from information
- Why curiosity is often stronger than self-protection
Today’s Pressure Prep
1. Separate the message from your identity.
Ask yourself:
What are they actually saying about the issue—not about me?
Focus on the substance before reacting to the emotion.
2. Ask one curiosity question before defending yourself.
Try:
“What are you seeing that I may be missing?”
That one question can shift the conversation from defensiveness back to learning.
Reflection
Where am I most likely to confuse challenge with rejection?
Remember:
Not everything that challenges your work is challenging your worth.
And one more:
Insecure leadership needs to look right. Secure leadership needs to get it right.
