Episode 33: Don’t Borrow Someone Else’s Pressure

Pressure is contagious.

In this episode of Before the Pressure, Dr. Arnold Sanchez explores how easily leaders can absorb the anxiety, frustration, urgency, or anger of the people around them—and how that can distort pace, judgment, and decision-making.

Strong leaders stay connected without becoming emotionally hijacked. They listen, acknowledge the pressure, get the facts, and decide what actually requires action.

In This Episode

  • Why other people’s emotions can quickly become your own

  • How urgency can distort leadership judgment

  • Why empathy does not require emotional imitation

  • How strong leaders keep calm people from being overshadowed by loud problems

  • Why emotional intensity is not the same as factual accuracy

  • How to support others without taking ownership of pressure that belongs to them

Today’s Pressure Prep

1. Notice what you are absorbing.
Ask:

Whose emotional state is most likely to become mine today?

Recognizing the person or environment helps you prepare before the pressure transfers.

2. Separate emotion from action.
When someone brings you pressure, ask:

What are they feeling—and what does the situation actually require?

Acknowledge the emotion. Then lead the action.

Reflection

Am I helping people carry pressure—or am I simply carrying it for them?

Remember:

You can care about someone’s pressure without carrying it for them.

And:

Other people’s urgency is information. It is not instruction.

Listen. Stay connected. Get the facts. Then decide what actually belongs to you.
