Pressure Is Not Always a Threat

Not every difficult moment is a crisis.
In this episode of Before the Pressure, Dr. Arnold Sanchez explores how leaders can mistake discomfort, disagreement, uncertainty, or criticism for a genuine threat—and how that misread can distort judgment.
When leaders feel threatened, they often become defensive, controlling, reactive, or closed off. The goal is not to ignore pressure. It is to interpret it accurately.
In This Episode
- Why discomfort can feel like danger
- How defensiveness narrows judgment
- The difference between being challenged and being threatened
- Why uncertainty does not mean you are failing
- How self-awareness improves leadership under pressure
- Why strong leaders stay open long enough to learn
Today’s Pressure Prep
1. Name the sensation before you name the situation.
Ask yourself: What am I actually feeling right now?
Defensive? Rushed? Exposed? Frustrated? Uncertain?
2. Ask one grounding question.
Is this actually a threat, or is this simply uncomfortable?
That question can create the space you need to respond with clarity instead of reflex.
Reflection
What kinds of pressure make me feel the need to defend myself?
Pay attention to the pattern.
Remember:
Do not confuse being challenged with being threatened.
Pressure is not always danger.
Sometimes it is simply the place where your leadership gets stretched.
