Pressure Shrinks Your Options

Pressure has a way of making complex situations feel binary.
Yes or no. Stay or leave. Push harder or walk away.
In this episode of Before the Pressure, Dr. Arnold Sanchez explores how stress can narrow thinking and convince leaders they have fewer options than they actually do. Strong leadership requires enough clarity to challenge assumptions, widen the question, and create space for better decisions.
In This Episode
- Why pressure compresses decision-making
- How binary thinking limits leadership options
- Why the first acceptable answer is not always the best answer
- How hidden assumptions shape difficult decisions
- Why strong leaders look for a third option
- How strategic flexibility improves judgment under pressure
Today’s Pressure Prep
1. Find the decision that feels binary.
Ask yourself:
Where am I telling myself I only have two choices?
Then force yourself to identify a third possible path.
2. Challenge the assumption.
When you hear yourself thinking, “We have no choice,” ask:
What assumption is making me believe that?
Test the assumption before accepting the limitation.
Reflection
Is the pressure I’m feeling coming from the situation—or from the belief that I have fewer options than I actually do?
Remember:
When pressure narrows your options, widen the question.
A strong feeling is not proof that only one path remains.
