Responsibility Is Not the Same as Control

One of the biggest sources of leadership pressure is trying to control outcomes you were never fully capable of controlling.
In this episode of Before the Pressure, Dr. Arnold Sanchez explores the difference between responsibility and control—and why confusing the two can lead to micromanagement, exhaustion, dependency, and unnecessary pressure.
Strong leaders own what is theirs, create clarity around expectations, build capable people, and learn to release the parts of the outcome that do not belong to them.
In This Episode
- Why responsibility and control are not the same
- How anxiety can disguise itself as micromanagement
- Why too much control can reduce ownership across a team
- How leaders unintentionally become bottlenecks
- Why letting go of control can increase organizational capacity
- How to distinguish what is yours to own from what is yours to release
Today’s Pressure Prep
1. Separate responsibility from control.
Ask yourself:
What is actually mine to own—and what am I trying to control that is not fully mine?
Own the preparation, communication, standards, decisions, and follow-through that belong to you.
Release the variables that do not.
2. Return one piece of ownership.
Look for one decision, task, or problem you have taken back from someone else.
Instead of solving it, ask:
“What do you recommend?”
Give people room to think, decide, and lead.
Reflection
Am I feeling pressure because I have too much responsibility—or because I am trying to control too much?
You do not need to control everything to lead well.
Own what is yours. Release what isn’t.
