Urgency Is Not the Same as Importance

Not everything that feels urgent deserves your immediate attention.
In this episode of Before the Pressure, Dr. Arnold Sanchez explores how leaders can protect their attention, distinguish true priorities from noise, and avoid absorbing other people’s panic as their own.
You’ll learn why urgency often hijacks judgment, how constant availability can turn you into the bottleneck, and why strong leadership sometimes means deciding what not to carry.
In This Episode
- Why urgency and importance are not the same
- How other people’s priorities can quietly take over your day
- Why attention is one of a leader’s most valuable resources
- How to avoid becoming the answer to every problem
- Why protecting priority is part of leading under pressure
Today’s Pressure Prep
1. Choose your real priority.
Ask yourself: If only one meaningful thing gets accomplished today, what needs to be true by the end of the day?
2. Interrogate urgency.
When something unexpected comes your way, ask:
Does this require me, and does it require me now?
Those two questions can protect your time, attention, and decision-making capacity.
Reflection
Am I leading my priorities—or am I simply responding to everybody else’s?
Remember:
Noise creates urgency. Purpose creates priority.
Protect your attention. Spend it on what matters.
